Sittin' by the fire

This is one of the things we did last week that I didn't mention in my earlier post.

Byron collected and stacked firewood during the day, so we could build a fire that night. At first, I dreaded going... I actually thought the air would be cold outside, but it wasn't... especially not after we got the fire going good. I really do love sitting out by a fire, once I'm out there... so it was Byron who was ready to come inside and I was still enjoying the warmth. I guess I had forgotten how nice it is to sit by the fire. Too bad we didn't have any marshmallows!!!

Byron was putting cattail fuzz in the fire in this pic... that's why it's sizzling. That stuff goes up like gasoline!!!

What I like about sitting by a fire is what you look like when you come inside. We always come in all black and sooty... with white sticky lips if we have marshmallows! You don't realize you were touching anything sooty because it's dark and you definitely don't realize you've been touching your face!

Btw, I like my marshmallows BURNT. I like to catch them on fire and burn them... then I eat the charred outside and RE-BURN another layer until I finish the marshmallow! How crazy is that?!? So, on top of the black smudges on my face, I have black flakes on my teeth! What a sight, huh? Byron makes a real good marshmallow, like his Grandpa Jerry... cause they're both patient enough... (toasted evenly a golden light brown).... and he'll give me some occassionally. I like those, too... but I like 'em burnt, just as much!!

I need to add marshmallows to my grocery list so we can do this again... and do it right. I wish I could make homemade marshmallows again. That was great fun and there's nothing like the taste of a good ol' homemade marshmallow in a cup of hot cocoa... but.... somehow the wire whisk for my KitchenAid got thrown away. It's been MIA for almost a year now. How sad.
